The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has commenced a nationwide strike today, April 7, raising concerns over disruptions to healthcare services in public hospitals across Nigeria.

The industrial action follows unresolved disputes between the doctors and the Federal Government over unpaid allowances and the suspension of an agreed remuneration framework.

NARD, in a statement after its National Executive Council meeting, directed members to embark on a “total and comprehensive strike,” citing the government’s failure to honour previous agreements.

At the centre of the crisis is the reported halt in the implementation of the revised Professional Allowance Table, an arrangement introduced after the 2025 strike to standardise payments such as call duty, shift allowances, and other incentives.

The association described the move as “unfortunate,” accusing authorities of triggering another avoidable disruption in the health sector.

Among its key demands are the immediate reinstatement of the allowance structure, payment of salary and promotion arrears, settlement of 19 months’ outstanding allowances, and the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.

Since the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu in May 2023, resident doctors have embarked on multiple strikes totalling 51 days, reflecting persistent tensions over welfare and working conditions.

A review of recent actions shows a 17-day strike in 2023 driven by rising living costs following the removal of fuel subsidy, as well as concerns over poor remuneration, delayed allowances, and inadequate training support.

This was followed by a five-day warning strike in September 2025 and a 29-day full strike in November 2025.

Doctors have also repeatedly highlighted the impact of workforce shortages caused by the migration of medical professionals abroad, which has increased workload and contributed to burnout among those remaining.

Speaking on the latest action, NARD Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, indicated that the strike could be suspended if the government reverses its decision on the allowance table.

He noted that the association delayed the strike’s commencement due to the public holiday, allowing time for possible intervention.
