The Labour Party’s 2023 Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has accused the police of stopping his planned declaration to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Rhodes-Vivour said the event, scheduled to be held at a field in Alimosho, was barricaded by a heavy police presence despite prior notification to security agencies.

“We wrote to the police and followed due process, but when we got there, the venue was occupied by armed officers,” he said on Friday.

He added that efforts to meet with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police over the development were unsuccessful.

Rhodes-Vivour alleged the move was politically motivated, describing it as “an attempt to silence the opposition.”

He, however, insisted that his declaration would still go ahead.

Rhodes-Vivour recently met with ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, at his Lagos residence in a meeting described as open and cordial, fueling speculation about his planned defection.
