Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Sunday officially received the Opambata, the ceremonial staff of the Eyo masquerade, marking the start of activities for the 2025 Adamu Orisha Play.

The event held at Lagos House, Marina, saw families of distinguished honourees pay homage.

The festival will celebrate the late Iyaloja-General Chief Abibat Mogaji, mother of President Bola Tinubu; Lagos’ first Military Governor, Gen. Mobolaji Johnson; the first civilian governor, Alhaja Lateef Jakande; and former governor Sir Michael Otedola.

Led by Olori Eyo and Akinsiku of Lagos, Chief Adebola Dosunmu, the “Ijade Opa Eyo” ceremony included traditional songs, prayers, and cultural displays.

Sanwo-Olu described the festival as “a powerful expression of our identity and continuity,” emphasizing its importance for Lagos’ cultural heritage.

He said, “The Eyo Festival will be a day of joy and pride, showcasing our rich traditions to local and global audiences.”

He also praised the black-and-white attire symbolizing unity and thanked Oba Rilwan Akiolu for reviving the festival after eight years.
