The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed that 16 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to a statement by the Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, the inmates breached the facility’s security and attacked personnel on duty, leading to their escape.

In the ensuing chaos, five correctional officers sustained various degrees of injuries. Two of the officers are reportedly in serious condition and are currently receiving urgent medical attention at a government health facility.

Umar confirmed that a swift response by security forces has led to the recapture of seven of the fleeing inmates, who have been returned to custody. A collaborative manhunt with other security agencies is currently underway to apprehend the remaining escapees.

Following the incident, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, visited the facility and ordered a comprehensive investigation. Nwakuche stated that any staff found culpable in the security breach would face severe disciplinary action.

The NCoS has urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or sightings of the escaped inmates to the nearest security formation. The Service reassured the public of its commitment to maintaining the security of all custodial facilities nationwide.
