Parents and advocacy groups have called on the Federal Government to provide urgent support for children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other special needs, citing limited access to care and education.

The call came during a 4-kilometre inclusion awareness walk in Abuja, where participants urged authorities to move beyond policy commitments and implement practical interventions.

They called on the government to expand access to affordable therapy, strengthen inclusive education, and establish functional support systems nationwide.

Manji Danjuma, founder of a special educational needs consultancy, said meaningful action must replace rhetoric.

“We need practical steps that improve access to therapy and education for children with special needs,” Danjuma said.

Evelyn Agoh, programme director at PESTC, echoed the call, stressing the need for sustained commitment.

“Policies must translate into real support systems that families can access,” she said.

Parents at the event highlighted the rising cost of therapy and care, urging authorities to introduce subsidies and expand support services.

Hauwa Umar, a parent, said improved access would ease the burden on families.

“Affordable services will make a huge difference in the lives of our children,” she said.

Another parent, Alpha Hauwa, called for increased awareness and inclusive policies to improve outcomes.

Stakeholders said stronger collaboration between government, communities and organisations is critical to building an inclusive society, adding that commitments must translate into measurable improvements in the lives of affected families.
