The Federal Government has approved the sum of N5bn for each state for the procurement of food items for distribution to the poor in their states.

This is in the wake of the high cost of food items following the removal of fuel subsidies.

Babagana Zulum, the Governor of Borno State disclosed this at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday following the conclusion of the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Zulum also revealed that five trucks of rice each have been also released by the Federal Government to the 36 state governors.

While noting that the sum released by the government was for the procurement of 100,000 bags of rice, 40,000 bags of maize, and fertilizers by the state governors, 52 percent of the funds were in the form of grants to the governors and 48% is in the form of loans.

Present at the NEC meeting also were governors and other stakeholders.
