Tension as Military Checkpoints Resurface in Parts of FCT over Fear of Protest

Military checkpoints have resurfaced in some major roads connecting the Abuja city centre to its suburbs over fear of impending protest by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria otherwise known as Shite.

Soldiers took control of strategic sections of the roads to intensify surveillance on motorists and commuters entering the Abuja city centre. The situation resulted in traffic gridlock along the roads, causing commuters to waste man-hours.

Earlier in the week, the sect threatened to embark on a protest to the heart of the nation's capital in solidarity with their members who are in detention, amongst other demands.

The government feels the planned demonstration could disrupt the existing law and order in the capital city, prompting the military and other law enforcement agents to be on alert.
