President Bola Tinubu has reappointed Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.) as chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for another five-year term, according to a statement posted on X by presidential adviser, Bayo Onanuga.

Marwa was first appointed in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after leading the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020. His renewed tenure means he will head the agency until 2031.

The former military governor of Lagos and Borno states, Marwa is an alumnus of the Nigerian Military School and the Nigerian Defence Academy. He has also served in several senior military and diplomatic roles.

He holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard University, specializing in public affairs and public administration.

The presidency highlighted his record at the NDLEA, noting major drug interceptions, the arrest of more than 73,000 drug traffickers, and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of hard drugs. The agency has also expanded nationwide campaigns against drug abuse during his tenure.

Tinubu described the reappointment as a vote of confidence, urging Marwa to intensify efforts against drug traffickers. “Do not relent in tracking the merchants of hard drugs out to destroy our people, especially the young ones,” the president said.
