President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday swore in Senator George Akume as the 21st Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

The ceremony was held at the Council Chambers of the State House and witnessed by Vice President Kashim Shettima and some senior government officials.

Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, the new SGF said it was an honor to be chosen to serve Nigeria.

“To have been selected to serve in this exalted position … is a challenge… a challenge to serve in line with the oath I have taken today,” he said.

“I assure Nigerians I will do my best. I will not disappoint the president. I will not disappoint this country. I will not disappoint my party. I believe Nigerians will find fulfillment in my responsibilities as I discharge them in their own interest,” he added.

The former governor of Benue State and immediate-past Minister of Special Duties and Integration has held several positions at the state and federal governments, retiring voluntarily as a Federal Permanent Secretary of Establishments and Management Services in 1998.

The 69-year-old Akume was the governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007 and subsequently, the Senator representing Benue North West in the National Assembly where he served as the Minority Leader from 2011 to 2015.
