The US House of Representatives has voted for the third time to halt President Donald Trump’s military action against Iran, with seven Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the measure.
The war powers resolution, passed 220 to 204 on Tuesday, would require Trump to end US military operations against Iran unless Congress gives further authorisation.
The vote is the latest attempt by lawmakers to limit the president’s authority over the conflict, which began in February and has continued for nearly seven months.
Seven Republicans backed the resolution, including Mariannette Miller Meeks and Zach Nunn of Iowa, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.
The House had previously approved similar measures in June and July, with four Republicans supporting those efforts.
The latest vote comes as the war continues to generate political and economic pressure in the United States, with rising energy costs and growing congressional concern over the financial cost of the conflict.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the war had cost the United States more than 38 billion dollars by August and could add up to three billion dollars a month depending on the intensity of the conflict.
The resolution now faces the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain.
Previous efforts to restrict Trump’s military authority have received some Republican support in the Senate but have not ultimately brought the conflict to an end.
The House action also comes less than two months before the November midterm elections, with the war and its economic impact becoming increasingly prominent issues in the congressional campaign.
