US Open Day 2: Alcaraz Advances, Venus Battles, Keys And Svitolina Crash Out

Day two of the 2025 US Open produced upsets, emotional scenes, and strong performances from the top seeds as the opening round continued in New York.

‎Mexico’s Renata Zarazua pulled off the shock of the day, defeating No. 6 seed and reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in three sets, 6-7 (10), 7-6 (3), 7-5. It was Zarazua’s first career victory over a top 10 opponent. Keys struggled badly, committing 89 unforced errors and 14 double faults in a match that lasted almost three hours.

‎12th seed, Elina Svitolina lost to Hungary’s Anna Bonda 6-2, 6-4

‎2nd seed and 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz began his campaign with a commanding straight sets victory 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 against American Reilly Opelka. Alcaraz limited his errors to just nine, against Opelka’s 23, and never drop serve throughout.

‎Elsewhere, 12th seed Casper Ruud and 11th seed Holger Rune also advanced to the second round.

‎Britain’s Jack Draper (5) overcame a scare to defeat qualifier Federico Agustin Gomez in four sets, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2, despite concerns about an arm injury.
‎Compatriot Cameron Norrie also moved on after his opponent  Sebastian Korda retired with injury.

‎In the women's section, Seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams, playing in her 25th US Open at the age of 45, produced a spirited performance before losing to 11th seed Karolina Muchova, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. She becomes the oldest player in the women’s singles draw since 1981.

‎The day also marked the final Grand Slam appearances of two former Top 5 players as Petra Kvitova lost to Diane Parry, while Caroline Garcia was beaten by Kamilla Rakhimova.

‎9th seed Karen Khachanov defeated American young star Nishesh Basavareddy in four sets.

‎15th seed Andrey Rublev also eased past Dino Prizmic in straight sets.

In day three, some of the tournament’s biggest names begin their campaigns:

‎World no. 2 Iga Swiatek will face Emiliana Arango at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

‎World no.1 Jannik Sinner square up against Vit Kopriva.

‎World no. 3 Alexander Zverev take on Alejandro Tabilo.

‎Amanda Anisimova will play against Kimberly Birrell.

While Lorenzo Musetti will face a tough tie against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
