WC Qualifier: FIFA Investigates South Africa for Fielding Ineligible Mokoena

FIFA has opened a case against Bafana Bafana for fielding ineligible Teboho Mokoena against Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier.

Mokoena played for South Africa against Lesotho in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifier in March.

However, the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder had been cautioned twice in the initial rounds, meaning he was ineligible to play against the Crocodiles.

FIFA were reluctant to act, leaving the majority of South African fans to think they were off the hook, but it seems it is not going to be the case.

Bafana Bafana currently lead Group C with 17 points. But if they are docked, they will be on 14, the same as Benin, who will remain second owing to their inferior goal difference.

Nigeria and Rwanda will be three points off the race.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has six days to respond to the case, and South Africans hope they will give a satisfying response to FIFA.
