Spanish Striker Dies After On-Field Collision with Goalkeeper

‎Spanish football has been thrown into mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, who died aged 30 after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Segunda Division match on Monday.

‎Tenerife confirmed the player's death in a statement on Tuesday, November 3, saying he passed away at 8:00 a.m. local time at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he had been receiving emergency treatment.
‎
‎The incident occurred during the closing stages of the match at the Heliodoro Rodríguez Lopez Stadium, with the score tied at 2-2.
‎
‎De Miguel was chasing a long ball from around the halfway line when Andorra goalkeeper Owono rushed out of his goal to clear it. The goalkeeper's raised knee struck the Tenerife forward during the challenge, leaving him motionless on the pitch.
‎
‎Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance, while several of De Miguel's teammates were visibly distressed as medical personnel attended to him for more than five minutes.
‎
‎The striker was eventually taken away in an ambulance. Spanish media reported that he suffered a cardiac arrest during the journey to hospital and was resuscitated by emergency personnel.
‎
‎Tenerife initially described his condition as stable despite its severity, but later announced that his neurological condition had deteriorated before confirming his death.
‎
‎Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge, while the referee abandoned the match in the 108th minute after consulting both teams. According to the referee's report, the players were not emotionally prepared to continue following the incident.
‎
‎Born in Madrid in September 1996, De Miguel began his professional career with Leganés B in 2015 before representing several Spanish clubs, including Navalcarnero, Unionistas and Castellón.
‎
‎He joined Tenerife ahead of the 2025-26 campaign and scored 11 goals during the season as the club secured promotion to Spain's second division.
‎
‎His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes across Spanish football. Barcelona, Real Madrid, La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation have all expressed condolences to his family, teammates and the Tenerife community.
‎
‎The Royal Spanish Football Federation also postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including fixtures in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina, as a mark of respect.
‎
‎De Miguel's death has once again brought attention to the physical dangers associated with professional football, particularly the risks involved in high-speed challenges between players.
‎
‎Football is a contact sport in which players regularly compete for possession through tackles, aerial challenges and physical contests. Goalkeepers are also required to leave their penalty areas to intercept long balls, sometimes bringing them into direct and dangerous contact with opposing players.
‎
‎However, fatal injuries resulting from on-field collisions remain extremely rare. The Associated Press noted that similar tragedies have occurred in football, including the death of 19-year-old Spanish goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez in 2025 following a collision during a lower-division match.
‎
‎Former Russian club CSKA Moscow goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun also died in 2001 after suffering head injuries in a collision during a match.
‎
‎These incidents raise difficult questions about player safety, the management of dangerous challenges, emergency medical response and whether existing safety measures are sufficient to protect footballers.
‎
‎While physical contact is an unavoidable part of the game, should football authorities do more to reduce the risks associated with reckless challenges, particularly when goalkeepers rush out to contest balls against advancing players?
‎
‎There is also the question of how quickly medical teams can respond when a player suffers a life-threatening injury during a match.
‎
‎For Tenerife, however, the immediate concern is the loss of a player whose career was still developing.
‎
‎The club described itself as heartbroken and extended its support to De Miguel's family, loved ones and supporters, while his family requested privacy during their time of grief.
‎
‎His death is a painful reminder that beyond the competition, trophies and entertainment, the safety and lives of footballers must remain paramount.
