Bright Amaewhule, President-General of GDI, has criticised the welcome reception for Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as one-sided, following the end of a six-month emergency rule in the state.

“The Governor of Rivers State is not for a particular group; he is for the people of Rivers State,” he said.

Last week, supporters gathered at Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, to receive the governor with singing and jubilation.

Governor Fubara, his deputy Prof. Ngozi Ordu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended by President Bola Tinubu amid rising political tensions between loyalists of the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking to Ifiemi Andrew on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Amaewhule insisted the governor’s supporters should have first allowed him to return quietly to the Government House. He said they could have then organised a formal visit later that included a coalition of supporters, including those loyal to former Governor Wike, to officially congratulate the governor on his return to office.

Amaewhule stressed that the supporters’ actions were divisive and warned that such behaviour could undermine the current peace in the state.

"Being sectional, they are calling for more problems'' he added.

Amaewhule also criticised the attendance of former commissioners and government officials loyal to Governor Fubara, questioning their integrity. He expressed concern over the use of masquerades during the reception and asked why similar efforts were not made to welcome the suspended state assembly members.
