Following a discussion on the relevance of Nigeria's educational system, Nigeria Info surveyed students at the University of Port Harcourt to hear their views on whether schools are preparing them for real life or simply producing certificate holders.
Some students argued that the Nigerian educational system focuses more on certificates than practical life preparation. One respondent said students only truly face the realities of life after leaving school, adding that this is when they discover whether they have been adequately prepared.
Another student alleged that some lecturers contribute to the problem by failing to ensure students fully understand what is being taught in the classroom. Sharing his personal experience, another respondent said he studied Biochemistry but had to seek employment opportunities in the construction sector because, according to him, his degree did not provide the qualifications he needed "to put food on my table."
However, not all respondents shared that view. One student argued that the educational system does prepare students for the real world by exposing them to experiences they otherwise would not have had. He said many students are still teenagers with limited life experience, and school helps prepare them for real-life situations. Another respondent added that the effectiveness of the educational system depends not only on what is taught but also on whether students are attentive and receptive to learning.
Is Nigeria’s educational system inspiring young people to embrace learning, or is it discouraging them from pursuing formal education?
