Energy consultant Kennedy Osuji has called for a reevaluation of the scheduled July 1st implementation of the proposed 40 per cent electricity tariff hike in Nigeria.

Osuji, who was a guest on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire with Sam Chinedu, urges the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to prioritize the potential repercussions of the electricity tariff hike on Nigerians during their discussions with the federal government.

The reasons behind the planned 40% increment in electricity tariffs are closely linked to the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), explains Osuji. He says MYTO was initially introduced to encourage investment in the energy sector and eliminate electricity subsidies. However, Osuji raises concerns regarding the lack of consideration for the impact on the everyday lives of Nigerians given the recent removal of petrol subsidy.

“This is going to be too much,” he said.

When asked if the increased tariff would result in improved service and supply for Nigerians, Osuji expresses skepticism, responding with a straightforward "No."

In light of the potential hardships that may arise, Osuji indicates that individuals should be prepared to face the consequences in case no measures are taken to mitigate the proposed tariff hike. He suggests washing clothes without squeezing them to avoid making use of electric irons which consume a lot of power.

“You need to take measures to protect yourself just in case there’s no human face brought to bear,” he advised.
