PVC: Will You Participate in the 2025 Voter Registration?

With voter registration set to begin in February 2025, some callers on Nigeria Info’s MorningCrossfire have shared their thoughts about participating in the exercise.

One caller expressed concern that widespread disappointment with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its handling of previous elections would discourage citizens from taking part in the upcoming registration.

“Voter registration; Nobody will come out because people have been disappointed with the electoral process,” he said. He explained that many citizens have lost faith in the electoral system and called for a complete overhaul of the country’s electoral framework.

Another caller suggested that voter apathy in the upcoming general election will likely increase due to the ongoing economic hardship, rather than issues within the electoral or judicial systems.

According to him, people are hungrier now than they were during the last registration. “How can a hungry man stand in a queue to register? Are they going to eat the voter’s card?” he asked.

He further explained that citizens typically participate in elections with the hope of economic improvements, but if those changes aren’t seen, they will be less interested in engaging in the process.

A different caller urged INEC to improve the registration process, particularly for young people who have just turned 18. She believes that making the process more efficient would encourage greater participation among young voters.
