One year after the attack that destroyed the chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly, lawmakers are now pushing to have October 29 declared an annual 'Commemoration Day' to remember this significant event in the state's history.

On one side, supporters argue that setting aside a day for commemoration to honour the legislature as a vital institution is completely justified.

"There's nothing wrong with remembering it every October," said a caller on Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt.

He argued that the Assembly complex is a sacred place where important issues affecting the welfare of Rivers people are discussed. He compared the significance of commemorating the attack to the 9/11 attacks in the United States, stating that remembering it every October is even more important to the residents of the state.

However, another caller questioned the need to remember the attack, suggesting it might have been orchestrated by criminals as part of a plot to impeach the state governor.

A third caller expressed no objection to marking the attack for reflective purposes but insisted that the reasons behind the commemoration should be carefully examined to ensure there is no political agenda behind it.
