Analyst Defends Rivers Panel’s Invitation to Wike, Others

Political affairs analyst Olalekan Ige says the invitation of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike by the Rivers State panel of inquiry over the destruction of council secretariats should not be seen as a witch hunt.

Some of the Minister's supporters argue that summoning him over allegations of masterminding the burning of local council secretariats, despite his absence at the scene, is unwarranted.

Speaking on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Ige clarified that a panel of inquiry has the authority to summon anyone for an investigation. He emphasized that previous Rivers State governors have appeared before such panels, and appearing before one does not imply guilt.

Meanwhile, lawyer and Rivers APC stakeholder Sogbeye Eli stated that political figures must distinguish between legitimate political expressions and inciting violence under the guise of political activity. He stressed that the destruction of government property is a criminal offence, not a political issue. "When a crime is committed, it's a crime, not politics," Eli asserted.

Eli also expressed his support for the panel of inquiry, viewing it as a lawful procedure to investigate the matter and prosecute those found guilty.
