Elections Are Civil Matters, Not Religious –CAN Leader Slams Shariah Council

Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has criticised calls for the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan.

The calls follow reports linking Amupitan to a past legal brief that alleged a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

Pressure has continued to build on Amupitan to step aside after the Shariah Council of Nigeria threatened to reject election results conducted under his leadership, accusing him of promoting the genocide narrative.

Speaking on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Rev. Hayab maintained that the office of the INEC Chairman is strictly non-religious. He accused the Shariah Council of exploiting old religious controversies as a justification for demanding Amupitan’s removal.

“When did the Shariah Council gain the power to accept or reject elections?” He emphasised that elections are civil processes and must be insulated from religious influence.
