Quackery: ‘No Auxiliary Nurses in Nursing Profession’— NANNM Official Warns

Flora Obele, a member of the State Executive Committee of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Rumukrushi Unit, Rivers State, has emphasised that it is standard practice for nurses to introduce themselves to patients for proper identification before carrying out any medical procedure.

Her comments come in response to the recent closure of six illegal health facilities across the state, following reports of quackery and impersonation. One of the facilities was allegedly operated by an unlicensed individual commonly referred to as an “auxiliary nurse,” who had been providing medical care to unsuspecting members of the public.

Speaking during an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Obele clarified that the term “auxiliary nurse” is not recognised in the nursing profession. She condemned the use of the label, noting that it does not exist in the official terminology of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

“There are no auxiliary nurses in the profession,” she stated. “Only registered and licensed nurses are recognised by the Council.”

Obele further blamed a corrupt system for enabling the continued operation of unqualified individuals in the healthcare sector, warning that such practices pose serious risks to public health.
