The Labour Party in Rivers State says it is committed to working with other political stakeholders through the Rainbow Coalition to promote peace and prevent a repeat of the events of the 2023 elections.

The state chairman of the party, Fredrick Nwoje, said this while speaking on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire with Andrew Ifiemi. He said the party is willing to join hands with other political groups to build a peaceful Rivers State, stressing the need for collaboration to avoid a recurrence of the political crisis associated with the 2023 elections.

“I want to assure the Rivers people. Our position in the coalition is that we want our own fair share; we want to join hands and build a state of peace...and make sure that what happened in 2023 doesn’t repeat itself," he said.

However, Nwoje said the party’s membership of the coalition was not cast in stone, adding that it could withdraw if its fair share of the political arrangement was not clearly defined. He said the party had communicated its position to the national leadership and expected its interests to be recognised as a member of the coalition.

"...If our own fair share of the coalition is not made obvious, I will still come back here and tell you we have pulled out...because we are expectant, and we expect that our due share will be given to us as members of the coalition,” he added.

Responding to a question on why the Labour Party could not stand on its own rather than join the coalition, Nwoje asked whether political stakeholders must always fight, suggesting that collaboration could provide a way forward.

Recall that the Rivers State chapter of the Labour Party officially declared its support for and joined the Rainbow Coalition, led by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. The cross-party alliance includes members of the PDP, APC, Labour Party and other political groups ahead of the 2027 elections, with the Rivers chapter also aligning with its support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid while maintaining its independent party objectives.
