Residents of Ohuhu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State have been praised after local youths joined security operatives and helped rescue two kidnap victims during a search operation that ended with the abductors fleeing into nearby forest areas.

The incident followed the abduction of a widow, Mrs. Onyinyechi Jonathan Ekechukwu, and a commercial tricycle operator, Dennis Okechi, on 10th June 2026 while returning from a farm area near Nkpu-Ala along the Umuahia–Uzuakoli Road.

According to community accounts, the kidnappers later contacted relatives and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million.

Residents said community youths quickly mobilised and entered surrounding bushes alongside police officers, vigilantes and forest guards in search of the victims.

Witnesses described hours of tension and exchanges of gunfire before the abductors abandoned the captives and escaped.

Narrating her experience after regaining freedom, Ekechukwu said she had feared she would never return home alive.

She praised the youths for taking risks to rescue them and described their intervention as an act of courage during a terrifying ordeal.

Confirming the operation, spokesperson for the Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said six suspected kidnappers carried out the attack.

She said: “On sighting the operatives, the suspected kidnappers fled, abandoning the victims.”

Chinaka added: “The victims were successfully rescued.

"One of the victims, who sustained injuries to the head and hand, was rushed to hospital for treatment.”

Police said efforts were continuing to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The rescue has drawn attention because of the active role played by local residents, at a time many communities across Nigeria continue to struggle with repeated cases of kidnapping and delayed rescue efforts.
