A leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has deepened, as a faction of the party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe as its authentic national chairman.
Speaking during a protest, Gombe insisted that he remains the legitimate leader of the party, citing a Court of Appeal order which, he said, directed that the status quo be maintained.
He criticised INEC for failing to recognise him, describing the commission’s action as inconsistent with the court’s ruling. According to him, respecting the rule of law is critical to protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
“We must uphold our constitutional framework and respect judicial decisions,” Gombe said.
The faction also warned against what it described as “political opportunists” trying to take advantage of internal issues within the party.
Backing Gombe’s position, ADC chieftain Leke Joseph Abejide alleged that the party’s former chairman resigned without proper procedure, creating confusion within the leadership structure.
Abejide claimed that Gombe was the only national executive member who did not resign, and therefore remains the rightful chairman.
The group further urged INEC to immediately correct its position and recognise Gombe to restore order within the party.
This protest comes after the David Mark-led faction marched to INEC in protest with a six-point demand, one of which is to recognise David Mark as the party's chairman.
Despite the crisis, party leaders called on members to remain committed to democratic principles, as preparations continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.
