The leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has deepened as a faction led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, announced plans to hold a national convention in Abuja on Sunday.
The move comes amid an ongoing power struggle between rival groups within the opposition party over who controls its structure and leadership.
In a statement issued by the faction’s Acting National Working Committee Chairman, Kingsley Temitope Ogah, the group said the convention would bring together “party leaders, delegates, state executives, youth and women representatives, and political stakeholders from across the country.”
The Kachikwu camp insists it remains the legitimate leadership of the ADC despite the emergence of another faction led by former Senate President David Mark.
Earlier, Kachikwu had rejected a separate ADC convention organised by the Mark-led group, describing it as illegal and contrary to a subsisting court order.
“Despite this order, the nation witnessed these desperate politicians hold a convention in the name of the African Democratic Congress, knowing that it had no locus before the law,” Kachikwu said.
He also accused opposition figures aligned with the coalition of attempting to hijack the party structure.
“They have one agenda and one agenda only, and that is to instigate a complete breakdown of law and order in the country through political gangsterism,” he said.
The ADC has faced months of internal disputes involving multiple factions, court cases and conflicting claims to leadership ahead of preparations for the 2027 elections.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier said it would maintain the status quo pending the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings involving the party.
