A faction of the African Democratic Congress has announced plans to hold a national convention and appoint interim leaders, deepening the party’s internal crisis.

The group, led by the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, says the move follows unresolved leadership disputes.

Spokesman Norman Obinna said the party has delayed its convention for nearly two years, despite earlier agreements.

He also accused former leaders of attempting to hand over control of the party to outsiders.

The faction rejected a rival coalition linked to figures like David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola and Bolaji Abdullahi, saying their actions are not binding on the party.

It added that interim leadership will oversee party affairs until a new National Working Committee is elected at the planned convention.

The development has further split the party into factions, raising concerns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
