Our sister station, Arewa Radio, has awarded ₦2.2 million in cash prizes to winners of the third season of its secondary schools debate competition, known as Muhawwara, in Kano.
The competition, which featured 32 students from 16 schools over three weeks, was organised to promote education, public speaking and critical thinking among young people.
Elmar International School emerged overall winner with 41.5 points, followed by Governor's College Boys with 38.5 points. Mairo Tijjani Girls Secondary School finished third.
The first-place winner received ₦1 million and a refrigerator, while the second-place winner received ₦700,000 and a television set. The third-place winner received ₦500,000 and a rechargeable phone.
Speaking at the event, Group Programmes Director of Nigeria Info FM, Cool FM, Wazobia FM and Arewa Radio, Prince Daniel Aboki, said the competition was designed to encourage young people to pursue education and develop skills needed to compete nationally.
“Our little intervention is to support education in Northern Nigeria,” he said.
Aboki explained that the programme was developed as Arewa Radio's version of I Beg to Differ, the premier debate competition organised by Nigeria Info, which has completed eight seasons.
The organisation's Corporate Communications Officer, Elefizi Imano, said the competition was open to students aged 13 to 16.
He explained that applicants were required to submit arguments both for and against assigned debate topics before a screening committee selected the participants.
The event also featured students presenting an open letter to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ahead of the 2027 general election.
Asma'u Murtala of Elmar International School thanked the organisers for giving students an opportunity to showcase their abilities and build confidence.
