Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has directed the introduction of a hybrid payment system at airport access gates nationwide following the suspension of a fully cashless arrangement that caused traffic gridlock.

The directive followed a meeting between the minister and officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria along with senior ministry officials to review operational challenges encountered during the initial rollout.

In a statement issued by the minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, the ministry said the new system will allow both cash and electronic payments at airport entry points.

Under the arrangement, the hybrid payment system will take effect from March 13, 2026.

Motorists who already possess FAAN Go Cashless Cards can continue using them until further notice. Other electronic payment options, including point of sale terminals and approved digital channels, will also remain available.

The ministry explained that the interim arrangement restores the previous access gate payment structure while authorities continue work on introducing a fully automated electronic payment system at airports across the country.

Members of the public and road users were encouraged to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as the authority works to optimise the long term cashless payment framework.
