Eko Power Limited has reaffirmed its status as a licensed electricity distributor in southern Lagos, saying its operations are governed by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC).

The company made the clarification in a statement on Wednesday, following changes to Nigeria’s electricity regulatory framework that gave state governments greater control over electricity markets within their territories.

“Eko Power Limited is the distribution company licensed by the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC) to distribute power in the southern parts of Lagos State,” the company said.

It explained that the changes followed the Electricity Act 2023, as amended, and a 2023 constitutional amendment that transferred regulatory powers over electricity generation, transmission and distribution within states to state governments.

The Lagos State Government subsequently enacted the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 and established LASERC to regulate the state’s electricity market.

According to Eko Power, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued an order in December 2024 to begin transferring regulatory oversight of Lagos’ retail electricity distribution market to LASERC.

The transition was completed in June 2025, when the state regulator assumed responsibility for electricity distribution and end-user tariffs, the company said.

Eko Power added that it operates under a distribution licence issued by LASERC and must comply with the commission’s tariff rules and service standards.

“This is reflected in Eko Power Limited’s own LASERC-approved cost-reflective tariffs and its published service-level commitments across all customer bands and feeders in Lagos State,” it said.

The company maintained that its regulatory status reflects Lagos State’s authority to oversee electricity distribution within its territory.

“Eko Power Limited exists today because Lagos State exercised its constitutional right to regulate retail electricity distribution within the state,” it said.

It added that it would continue publishing tariff information and service performance data in line with LASERC’s transparency requirements.

The development forms part of Lagos State’s efforts to establish a state-regulated electricity market and improve accountability in power distribution.
