Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi said Monday he narrowly escaped death after a crash in Lagos that he blamed on occupants of another vehicle who he says were drunk.
The 31-year-old shared a video on Instagram showing heavy damage to the front of his SUV.
Onazi, who played for Lazio and Trabzonspor and was part of Nigeria’s 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad, appealed for stronger action against alcohol-related driving.
“The government has to do something about drunk people driving in Lagos. Almost lost my life last night with two drunk boys in the car,” he wrote.
The incident adds to rising concern over road safety in Nigeria, where recent high-profile crashes — including a deadly December collision that injured boxing star Anthony Joshua and killed two people — have renewed calls for tougher enforcement and better road standards.
Road-safety experts say poor enforcement, speeding and impaired driving are major causes of crashes.
Onazi’s post prompted messages of relief from fans and fellow players.
The former midfielder, who recently signed with Lithuanian side Žalgiris after spells in Europe, called for authorities to act so that other road users are spared similar close calls.
