Residents of Lagos State are being urged to prepare for possible flooding after heavy rainfall hit parts of the city, as the Federal Government warned that the state is among those at high risk this year.

The warning follows the release of the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, which listed Lagos among 33 states likely to experience flooding.

Minister of Water Resources, Joseph Utsev, said over 14,000 communities nationwide fall within high-risk flood zones.

“Timely information could help save lives, protect infrastructure, and reduce economic losses,” he said.

The report also warned that major cities, including Lagos, may face flash floods due to heavy rainfall and poor drainage systems.

This comes as Lagos recorded intense rainfall earlier today, raising concerns about waterlogging in flood-prone areas.

Experts say Lagos remains vulnerable because of its coastal location and low-lying terrain, which make it prone to flooding during the rainy season.

Utsev described the flood outlook as a call to action for governments and residents.

“Predictions alone will not be effective unless communities act on the information,” he said.

Authorities also warned that coastal states like Lagos could face additional risks from rising sea levels and tidal surges.

The government has advised residents to clear drainage channels and follow early warning updates as the rainy season continues.

Officials say early preparation remains the best way to reduce the impact of flooding and protect lives and property.
