Fountain School has defeated Straitgate Schools, Lagos, in a debate on the motion, "Nigeria is a poor country," to secure a quarter-final ticket in the I Beg to Differ Season 9 National Finals.
The Abuja-based school recorded 77.1 points against Straight Gate School's 73.9 on Tuesday.
The result moved Fountain School closer to being national champions, following their impressive record of being the first school to qualify for the national finals.
Representing Fountain School, the opposition debaters Uche Anigbo and Esther Ojotule Abah argued that the resources in the country are enough to classify the country as wealthy.
They used an analogy of a village with an enormous reservoir of water whose residents are unable to gather water to buttress the fact that the country is where it is because of a lack of effort, and not a wealth of resources.
In support of the motion, Straitgate School, represented by Owosina Grace and Uzoma Shine, argued that the presence of multiple millionaires in a sea of poor people greatly points to the poverty in the land.
They cited the many inequalities that exist in wealth distribution, the country's GDP, and infrastructural development as pointers to the multidimensional poverty that exists in the country.
The adjudication panel awarded Fountain School 71.5 points out of 90, compared with 69 points for Straight Gate.
In the live public vote, Fountain School received 56 percent of the votes, while Straitgate got 44 percent.
The victory secures Fountain School's place in the quarter-finals and keeps the Abuja school in the running to be national debate champions of the I Beg to Differ Season 9 Tournament of Champions.
