Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the immediate reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged roads across the state as the dry season creates better conditions for construction work.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, Tokunbo Ajanaku, disclosed this on Thursday during an inspection of ongoing road projects.
Ajanaku said Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area was a major focus, with work underway on Godwin Omonuwa Road, Taiwo Street, Salamotu Street, Peter Agah Street and Ibeh Street.
He said the projects were aimed at addressing poor road conditions and improving movement within communities.
“These roads are important links within the Oshodi-Isolo axis, serving residents, traders, business owners and other road users daily,” Ajanaku said.
He added that the reconstruction would “reduce transportation costs, enhance road safety, boost commercial activities and create a more conducive environment for businesses and residents.”
Other roads covered by the inspection include Ogunnusi Road in Ojodu Local Council Development Area, Awolowo Way in Ikeja, Lanre Awolokun Road and Idowu Olaitan Street in Shomolu, as well as Idimu-Ikotun Road in Alimosho.
Ajanaku explained that heavy rainfall often limits asphalt laying, forcing the corporation to rely on emergency repairs to keep major roads usable during the rainy season.
He said the agency would now focus on more comprehensive and lasting repairs.
Much of the work, including asphalt laying, would be carried out at night to reduce traffic disruption.
The general manager urged residents to be patient, saying repairs would be prioritised according to road conditions, traffic volume and the urgency of each project.
He also called on residents to protect public infrastructure by avoiding dumping refuse in drains, spilling petroleum products and discharging wastewater onto roads.
“Our roads are our collective heritage.
"Government has the responsibility to provide and maintain them, but citizens also have a duty to protect them,” he said.
