The knockout rounds of the Tournament of Champions, I Beg to Differ Season 9, is shaping up as Silverbird International School, Port Harcourt, school secured their ticket to the quarter finals.
Chikwere Ruth and Godwin Omanibe Agatha of Government Science Secondary School, Tungan-Maje, Abuja, who argued in support of the motion, "Environmental Gains Can Justify Environmental Harm", were defeated in the round of 12 following an intense debate.
The superior arguments of Silverbird International School, represented by Emmanuella Johnbull and Sonia Chisom Ugwuegbu, defeated them when the overall scorers were tallied, despite not earning the audience's vote.
The opposition strongly argued against the motion, citing the damage done to the environment of the Nigerian Niger Delta despite the oil boom and the economic benefits that come with it.
They also mentioned how the exploitation of national resources have led to deforestation and the high content of harmful chemicals in drinking water in the North and in the South.
In supporting the motion, the Government Science School representatives stated that, "nature heals", citing the efforts of different bodies to restore the forests and rivers to what they used to be, using the wealth gotten from supposedly harming the environment.
They also argued strongly that nature can only be protected with the wealth gotten from it, and that poverty will contribute quicker to its destruction that environmental exploitation.
Following the completion of the three rounds of the debate, the adjudicators gave Government Science Secondary School their exit records gathered across the three rounds.
The Abuja-based School scored 64 points compared with Silverbird's 69 points.
Audience voting then went against the Port Harcourt-based school, giving the school 35 percent of the vote against the Abuja-based school's 65 percent.
The final combined score stood at 70.5 points for Government Science Secondary School and 72.5 points for Silverbird International School, the eventual winners.
The contest set the stage for an exciting next phase which moves us closer to our Season 9 champion in the Tournament of Champions, I Beg to Differ.
