World No. 1 Jannik Sinner has officially ended his 2026 season after deciding to undergo treatment for a persistent knee injury.

The Italian announced the decision on Tuesday, October 6, in a video shared on his official X account.

Sinner said he and his medical team have decided that he needs treatment for the knee problem, which has kept him out of competitive action since his Wimbledon triumph in July.

“On the advice of his medical team, Jannik Sinner will follow a course of treatment for inflammation in his knee,” his team said in a statement.

“The treatment is intended to give him enough time to recover before beginning preparations for the 2027 season.

The 25-year-old has not played since defeating Alexander Zverev to successfully defend his Wimbledon title in July.

His knee problem subsequently forced him to miss the US Open, China Open and Shanghai Masters.

Sinner said he had made the decision with his long-term career in mind, choosing not to rush his return for the final tournaments of the year.

He had previously hoped to return in time for the Asian swing but withdrew from the China Open after admitting that his knee was not yet ready for competition. He later pulled out of the Shanghai Masters.

The injury brings an early end to what had been an outstanding 2026 campaign for Sinner.

Before his absence, he won the Australian Open, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome and Wimbledon, according to his official tournament record.

His decision also means the battle for the year-end world No. 1 ranking is now set to intensify, with Alexander Zverev among those chasing the Italian at the top of the ATP rankings.

Sinner is now expected to focus on his recovery and preparations for the 2027 season.
