The Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero, on Saturday conferred an honorary doctorate on Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, the university and the governor’s office said.

The honour was given during the university’s joint maiden convocation at the University Convocation Arena in Aliero.

A statement from the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said the university’s Senate “selected and confirmed” Governor Lawal for the award.

The Kebbi varsity conferred on Governor Lawal the “Degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc) Honoris Causa in recognition of his distinguished service and contributions to societal development,” the statement said.

The Senate highlighted the governor’s “achievements in education, health, infrastructure, the economy, and workers' welfare as major reasons for the honor.”

“We are in Aliero today to mark a milestone for the university and to celebrate service that makes a difference,” the statement said, quoting university officials who added that the honour “reflects its commitment to recognising individuals whose work has had a meaningful and lasting impact on society.”

The convocation began Wednesday with a press briefing by the Vice Chancellor, Engr. Prof. Danshehu Bagudu Gwandangaji.

Professor Bagudu told the gathering that since its founding in 2005 the university “has graduated 7,221 undergraduate students, along with 669 postgraduate students, between the 2010/2011 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.”

The spokesperson quoted the university as saying the recognition should encourage the governor “to put more effort into his resolve to make Zamfara State greater.”

The governor thanked the university.
