The Labour Party said Friday it will appeal a Federal High Court judgment and described the removal of its executive names from the Independent National Electoral Commission portal as “strange, unacceptable.”

In a statement, National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh said the party will “upturn judgment of the lower court at the appellate court.”

He urged members to stay calm while lawyers challenge the ruling.

“For us in Labour Party, our faith is strong that the appellate court will do the right thing,” he said.

The party blamed what it called the “strangulation and monetisation of democracy” by powerful politicians and warned Nigerians to resist.

“Some persons who are applauding the impunity by some politicians should retrace and do some introspection,” Ifoh said.

Ifoh said the caretaker committee whose names appeared on INEC’s portal was improperly formed.

“It is very clear that the appointment of the caretaker committee did not go through the normal procedure. Proper notice was not given in line with the party constitution and the electoral act,” he said.

The statement vowed to keep fighting internal control by party godfathers.

“We will continue with the struggle to take our party from the godfather,” Ifoh said.

He also warned that celebrations by some officials over the INEC listing would be short-lived: “We are very sure that it will be quashed on appeal.”

The Labour Party called on supporters to await the court of appeal’s decision and to avoid violence.
