The Lagos State Government has cancelled the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta just hours before the scheduled New Year’s Eve shows, urging residents to mark the new year in private prayer instead.

In a statement released on Tuesday by Gboyega Akosile, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the cancellation and directed Lagosians to “spend quality time in personal prayers for the nation, the State and the people of Lagos.”

The Greater Lagos Fiesta, an annual year-end celebration featuring concerts, fireworks and large crowds across multiple venues, had been expected to host top artistes and thousands of attendees.

No specific reason was given for the eleventh-hour cancellation.

Sanwo-Olu wished residents a prosperous new year and said his administration remains committed to delivering on its promises.

He urged prayers for “continued prosperity, leadership, peace, productivity and our general well-being.”

The move mirrors a similar decision in 2021, when the event was called off over public health concerns related to COVID-19.

Officials said emergency arrangements for the festive period remain in place and advised the public to follow official channels for any further updates.
