The Lagos State Police Command has begun enforcement against vehicles operating without proper registration plates or with concealed number plates, saying the move is aimed at improving security and making it easier to track criminal activities.
The operation follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Olatunji Disu, who ordered commands nationwide to intensify checks on unregistered vehicles and vehicles with altered or hidden registration details.
Speaking in Lagos, Commissioner of Police Jimoh Olohundare said the command would enforce the order while maintaining respect for citizens’ rights and dignity.
“It is prohibited for anyone in Lagos to cover their plate number or to use tinted glasses where the front screen and the right screen are tinted and covered,” Olohundare said.
“People are also prohibited from using unregistered vehicles,” he added.
Police authorities said the enforcement became necessary because vehicles without visible registration have increasingly created challenges for security agencies trying to identify suspects and investigate crimes.
Addressing police leadership in Abuja, the IGP described the trend as a growing threat to public safety.
He said, “Every vehicle operating on our roads must be properly registered and must display its approved registration number plates in accordance with the law.”
The police chief warned that any vehicle found without number plates or with concealed or altered registration details would be stopped, impounded and subjected to legal processes.
Olohundare said officers had already been briefed on the directive and instructed to apply the rules professionally and without abuse.
Police also urged Lagos residents to comply with vehicle registration requirements, stressing that enforcement would apply equally to all road users.
