The Lagos State Government says it is upgrading key waterfronts and jetties so residents and visitors can enjoy a better “Detty December” this year.
The Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development said work is already under way to fix and modernise many landing points.
The upgrades include rehabilitating old jetties, installing modern concrete pontoons, and redesigning the Bariga jetty into a modern fish market to support water transport, trade and leisure.
Dayo Alebiosu, the state commissioner for waterfront infrastructure, said the changes aim to lift Lagos’ tourism image.
“Tourism is an experience, and December brings a global audience to our city,” he said. “We must therefore present waterfronts that meet the quality people see in places like Scandinavia and the Palm Jumeirah.”
Alebiosu also spoke about plans for a long-awaited boardwalk along the Wole Olateju waterfront and promised tighter rules for land reclamation so coastal projects do not block water flow.
“It defeats the purpose when buildings face the road and fence off the water,” he said.
The state is working with LAGFERRY, the Ministry of Transportation, private partners and tourism groups to move some jetties to better sites and to improve safety for ferry users.
Private partners are also helping stage events: Giwa Gardens is offering 100,000 free tickets during the season in partnership with the Lagos tourism ministry and sponsors.
“Detty December is about joy, family and togetherness,” said Giwa Gardens founder Keji Giwa.
Officials said upgrades should reduce crowding at jetties, speed up boat rides and make the waterfront safer and more welcoming during the busy holiday period.
