The Lagos State Government has warned schools against forcing parents and guardians to buy approved books, uniforms and stationery directly from them when the same items are available from other suppliers.
The warning was issued by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, LASCOPA, as schools prepare to reopen for the new academic session.
LASCOPA said parents are often given lists of textbooks, stationery and uniforms after completing their children's admission process.
It said problems arise when schools reject equivalent items bought from other shops, even when they meet the schools' requirements.
“Where equivalent approved products are reasonably available elsewhere, parents and guardians should generally be free to choose where to purchase them,” the agency said.
“A school should not unnecessarily restrict parents from buying equivalent approved books, uniforms or stationery from other suppliers,” it added.
LASCOPA said such restrictions should not be imposed unnecessarily and urged parents to know their consumer rights.
“You have a choice.
"Know your rights.
"Speak up,” the agency stated.
Parents and guardians who believe their consumer rights have been violated can report their complaints to LASCOPA through its available channels, including its toll-free line.
The state government also reminded residents that “In Lagos State, consumers are kings.”
The warning comes as families prepare for school resumption and face the cost of buying uniforms, textbooks and other learning materials.
