The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency says two separate fire outbreaks in Lagos over the weekend were caused by electrical surges, with no loss of life recorded.
The agency’s Head of Public Affairs, Afolabi Olawale, confirmed the incidents in a statement, saying both fires happened on Sunday in different parts of the state.
According to him, the first fire occurred at FESTAC Town Phase 2, where a single-storey building caught fire after a conduit wire sparked on the ground floor.
He said emergency responders acted quickly to control the situation.
“The prompt response of the LASEMA Response Team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service prevented the fire from spreading,” Olawale said.
He added, “Fortunately, no casualties were recorded during the incident, though household items worth millions of naira were destroyed.”
Olawale said a second fire broke out at Rev. Ogunbiyi Estate in Ikeja GRA.
He explained that the incident was caused by “an electrical surge in an air conditioning unit” on one of the upper floors of a duplex.
Residents in the area were able to act quickly before emergency teams arrived.
“Prompt intervention by residents and emergency responders prevented escalation of the incident, while no injuries or loss of life were recorded,” he said.
LASEMA said operations at both locations have been completed and the affected areas made safe.
The agency also warned residents to be careful when using electrical appliances, especially during power fluctuations.
It urged the public to report emergencies quickly through toll-free numbers 112 or 767.
Fire outbreaks linked to electrical surges are common in Lagos, especially when electricity is suddenly restored, often causing sparks that can lead to fires.
