Oyo State Gov. Seyi Makinde has selected former Department of State Services Director-General Lawal Musa Daura as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election.
Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), announced Daura’s selection Thursday at the party’s national convention in Bauchi.
Daura served as DSS director-general from 2015 to 2018 under former President Muhammadu Buhari before he was removed from office by then-acting President Yemi Osinbajo.
According to a statement by Oyo State Commissioner for Information Dotun Oyelade, Makinde said Daura was “deliberately chosen to solve the security situation of the country.”
Daura’s selection replaces Ibrahim Adamu Bala, who had earlier been announced as Makinde’s running mate.
The Punch reported that Bala’s role was intended to be a placeholder.
The choice of a former intelligence chief places national security at the centre of the APM ticket as Makinde prepares to challenge President Bola Tinubu and other contenders in the 2027 election.
At the Bauchi convention, Makinde also called for cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the election, saying Nigerians deserve a credible alternative.
“Let the coming campaign be a contest of ideas.
"Let us debate the evidence.
"Let us compare records,” Makinde said.
He urged political candidates to answer a basic question: “How will the lives of Nigerians be better because we were allowed to lead?”
Bauchi Gov. Bala Mohammed, who emerged as the APM’s national leader, expressed confidence in the Makinde-Daura ticket.
“We are putting square pegs in square holes,” Mohammed said, describing Makinde as an engineer who knows how to “manufacture, develop and draw a plan.”
The APM said it would work with other opposition groups to build a stronger challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.
