South African opposition leader Julius Malema has criticised recent xenophobic attacks in the country, warning that violence against foreign nationals will not solve unemployment.

Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, spoke at an event marking the 14th anniversary of the Collen Mashawana Foundation.

His comments come amid rising tensions and viral videos showing attacks on African immigrants, including Nigerians, Zimbabweans and Ghanaians.

He challenged those blaming foreigners for job losses to reflect on their actions.

“You say foreigners are taking jobs, yet after closing their businesses, how many jobs have you created?” he asked.

Malema said shutting down foreign-owned businesses does more harm than good.

“You closed a shop that hired five people and you say they take our jobs.

"After closing that shop, how many jobs have you created?” he said.

He argued that unemployment cannot be solved through violence, stressing that skills and economic participation are more effective solutions.

He described claims that immigrants are responsible for job losses as misguided.

The opposition leader also rejected political support built on anti-foreigner sentiments.

“I will not accept votes that require me to promote hatred against fellow Africans,” he said.

Malema urged South Africans to focus on unity and practical solutions to economic challenges instead of blaming migrants.

His remarks come as pressure grows on authorities to address rising xenophobic attacks and protect foreign nationals living and working in the country.
