Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has said comments he made about Peter Obi, his former principal, during a recent interview were taken out of context.
Baba-Ahmed made the clarification after his remarks during an interview with journalist Seun Okinbaloye sparked reactions among supporters of the 2023 Labour Party presidential ticket.
In the interview, Baba-Ahmed discussed his relationship with Obi and their political journey after the 2023 election.
He said Obi should not be portrayed as the person who abandoned him, arguing that their political relationship was more complicated.
“Even when Peter Obi leaves you, they say you left him.
"How fair is this?” Baba-Ahmed said.
He also said Obi would remain grateful for the support he received from him during the 2023 presidential election.
“Peter Obi will remain grateful for how I stood by him in 2023,” Baba-Ahmed said.
The former vice-presidential candidate's comments were widely discussed online, with some people interpreting them as criticism of Obi and his political record.
Baba-Ahmed, however, said the reaction did not reflect the full context of his interview.
He also spoke about the 2027 presidential race, saying President Bola Tinubu does not have enough votes to win the election.
“Tinubu does not have the votes to win the 2027 election; Atiku doesn’t have anyone to declare him president,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed and Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform.
They finished third behind the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party candidates.
The controversy comes as political parties and opposition groups position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
