Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have arrested a 63-year-old Chinese woman, Ting Hung Kiong, for allegedly attempting to smuggle 31 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, known as Canadian Loud, into Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The suspect, who was said to have naturalised in Malaysia, was arrested on 17th of May after arriving from Thailand through Dubai aboard an Emirates flight, according to an NDLEA statement released Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi.

The agency said investigations showed that the suspect travelled from Malaysia to Thailand before heading to Nigeria with “two large travel boxes containing the synthetic cannabis consignment.”

During questioning, the suspect reportedly said “her daughter sponsored her trip from Malaysia to Thailand and subsequently to Nigeria.”

She also claimed she spent two weeks in Thailand before she “was handed the illicit consignment at the Thailand airport to deliver in Nigeria.”

In another operation, NDLEA officers recovered 1,825,710 tablets of Tapentadol 250mg valued at more than ₦2.1 billion from a shipment that arrived from India at the Lagos airport cargo section.

At the Abuja airport, operatives arrested a 29-year-old building engineer, Babatunde Prosper Afekhide, while trying to board a flight to Italy with 10,280 opioid pills hidden inside his luggage.

In Enugu, another suspect, Onyeka Valentine Emeka, was arrested after excreting 185.36 grams of cocaine during observation by NDLEA officers.

The agency also announced major cannabis seizures in Edo, Ekiti and Lagos states, including 1,116 kilograms of skunk recovered from a warehouse in Ikole-Ekiti.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa praised officers involved in the operations and urged them “to continue to raise the operational bar” in the fight against drug trafficking.
