Senator Ali Ndume has urged the Nigerian military to intensify efforts to rescue 79 people still being held by insurgents in Borno State, following the successful rescue of kidnapped schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
The senator, who represents Borno South, praised the armed forces for securing the release of the Oyo victims after weeks in captivity but said similar efforts must now be directed toward those still held in the North-East.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, Ndume said, "I commend the military for what they did in Oyo.
"They should do the same in Borno."
He added, "We still have 79 people in captivity, including 42 from my senatorial district.
"More than 30 of them were recently abducted from Lassa."
According to the lawmaker, insecurity remains a major challenge despite recent military successes against terrorists and kidnappers.
"We appreciate what the military has done, but the job is not finished until those still in captivity are rescued," Ndume said.
He urged security agencies to sustain offensive operations against insurgent groups and improve intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.
The appeal came immediately after security forces rescued dozens of pupils and teachers abducted from a school in Oyo State, an operation widely praised by President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other public officials.
The Nigerian Army said the operation followed weeks of intelligence gathering and coordinated action by security agencies.
Ndume has repeatedly called for stronger military action in Borno.
Last month, he also commended troops for rescuing more than 400 captives from Ngoshe but appealed to security agencies to continue working for the release of those still being held by insurgents.
