Football fans around the world will see new rules at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, organisers have said, as preparations continue for the tournament later this year.

In a report released Tuesday, officials from FIFA, the global governing body of football, explained that several changes will be made to make the game fairer and more exciting.

The 2026 World Cup will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and it will be the first time the tournament features 48 teams instead of 32.

One of the key changes involves how teams can make substitutions during a match.

FIFA has confirmed that teams will be allowed to make more player substitutions during games, which can help manage player fatigue and reduce the risk of injuries.

This rule was first used in recent major competitions and will now be part of the World Cup programme.

Another important update relates to handling fouls and discipline.

Referees will continue using video assistance technology (VAR) to check key decisions so that errors are reduced, and match results are fairer.

Organisers said this is part of efforts to “improve the accuracy and credibility of officiating” in the competition.

FIFA also said there will be fresh guidelines to support player welfare, especially regarding heat and hydration breaks during matches played under hot weather conditions.

This aims to protect players’ health and performance.

Organisers believe these rule changes will help make the 2026 World Cup “more dynamic, safer, and inclusive” for players and spectators alike.

The tournament is scheduled to kick off in June 2026 and is expected to attract millions of fans worldwide.
