Nigeria’s senior men’s handball team opened its Africa Nations Cup campaign with a 25-23 victory over Algeria on Wednesday at Petit Stade in Kigali.

The Golden Arrows took early control and led 16-13 at halftime after a strong defensive display and efficient finishing in attack.

Algeria fought back in the second half, but Nigeria “held firm in the closing minutes to secure a deserved two points,” the match report said.

Coach Salami’s side got important goals from Faruk Yusuf and John Shagari, while goalkeeper Okwor Obinna made several crucial saves that kept the team ahead when the match tightened.

The win puts Nigeria in a good position in Group A, which also includes hosts Rwanda and Zambia.

The Golden Arrows are scheduled to meet Zambia in their next group match on Thursday.

The 27th Africa Men’s Handball Nations Cup in Kigali is also a qualifying event for the 2027 World Men’s Handball Championship in Germany.

Teams that perform well here can earn places at the world tournament.

Nigeria has appeared at the Nations Cup many times; their best finish was fourth place in 1998.

The team will aim to build on Wednesday’s result as the group stage continues.
