The Federal Government says it is working on plans to introduce regulated internet access for children below 16 as part of efforts to make the digital space safer for young Nigerians.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, disclosed this on Thursday while discussing government measures to expand digital access and protect young people online.
The planned regulation is expected to address concerns about children’s exposure to harmful online content and other risks associated with unrestricted internet use.
Tijani had earlier said the government was considering stronger measures on children’s access to social media and had sought public views on possible age restrictions.
In March, he said the government was examining evidence on how best to protect children without unnecessarily limiting access to the internet.
The latest proposal comes amid growing international debate over children’s online safety, including age-verification measures and restrictions on social media platforms.
Nigeria’s plan is also coming as the government expands internet access for students.
Officials said the Federal Government would begin a zero-rated data initiative for university students from Independence Day, 1st October 2026, allowing them to access approved educational content without paying data charges.
The government has not yet announced the exact form the under-16 regulation will take, including how children’s ages would be verified or which online services would be covered.
Tijani’s earlier consultation suggested that the government was considering evidence-based measures rather than an immediate blanket ban on social media for children.
The proposal is expected to generate further discussion among parents, schools, technology companies and child-safety advocates as the government develops the framework.
